In the mid-60's the Impala was the best-selling full-size car in the U.S. Since then, the model has been revived twice in the past twelve years with very different looks and competition than the original generations. Although the newest Impala is still a popular choice among buyers, the BuyingAdvice Team believes other competitors outshine the Chevrolet Impala in design and some key standard features.
What the Impala does offer is muscular engine choices with good fuel economy, lots of interior room and a fair amount of comfort. Safety scores are also solid. But where the Impala falls behind some competitors is the amount of safety features that come standard in its lower-end trims. For example, ABS and stability control are optional on the lower-end trims. There are also key design enhancements the Impala could benefit from like upgrading to a 5-speed automatic transmission for better acceleration and performance, tightening its handling and making the interior of the high-end SS trim more lavish.
The Impala certainly has attributes to offer mid to full-size sedan buyers, but it may also be worth looking into some of the higher-selling competition like the Honda Accord or the Toyota Camry. Another strong competitor with some more features and relatively the same price is the Ford Fusion SE.
