The Honda Civic GX is currently the only natural gas car available in the U.S. It has been available to the public since 2005. It looks and drives like a regular Honda Civic, but it runs only on natural gas instead of gasoline. It's known for being the cleanest internal combustion vehicle on the planet.
The Honda Civic GX is a 4-door family sedan, available in one trim, the 5-Spd AT.
It's equipped with a standard 1.8-liter, I4, 113-horsepower, compressed natural gas engine that achieves 24-mpg in the city and 36-mpg on the highway. The MSRP is $24,590.
The Pros:
- The emissions are 90% cleaner.
- The cost of natural gas is much lower than gasoline.
- Natural gas is safer than gasoline in an accident.
- Buyers can qualify for a $4,000 tax credit.
- You can buy a home refueling system.
The Cons:
- There are not as many filling stations for natural gas as there are for gasoline.
- There are not as many repair shops certified to do repairs on a natural gas vehicle.
- The natural gas tank takes up a lot of trunk space.
- There is often a waiting list to buy the car, because supply does not meet demand.
